Description
An Afro-Cuban rock star is Cimafunk. El Alimento, his most recent album, received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album. His name alludes to his ancestry as a Cimarrón, a group of maroons who fought against and managed to escape slavery, as well as the core of his music, which uses hip-hop, Afrobeat, and funk to disrupt Cuban music.
Cimafunk has become one of today’s top performers after going on a number of successful tours in Europe and the US with his group of nine Havana musicians, La Tribu. His electric shows are a physical extravaganza and a celebration of groove. By reinventing modern Cuban music, Afro-Latin identity, and the blending of black cultures, Cimafunk crafts an own universe.
